Fear the unknown

Field dispatches from our overnight investigations: raw audio, thermal anomalies and case findings. Sent only when the evidence is worth your nerve.

Who we are

Evidence over folklore for the moments nobody can explain.

Our approach

Every case begins as a question, never a conclusion. We record, measure and re-test until the data either holds up under review or collapses on its own.

Evidence x Unknown

EMF meter and audio recorder resting on dusty floorboards in a derelict room

Instruments never blink

Thermal video and still cameras, EMF meters, full-spectrum stills and continuous audio run for the length of every investigation.  Readings are time-stamped as they happen, so nothing is reconstructed from memory after a long night.

Nothing is called paranormal lightly

Pipes, drafts, wiring, wildlife and the human nervous system explain most of what frightens people. A case only reaches our files once every ordinary cause has been chased down and ruled out. We debunk everything first, then what is left, could be paranormal.

Fieldwork

Overnight investigations

Multi-hour sits in homes and historic buildings, instrumented end to end, with every anomaly logged as it occurs.

Analysis

Evidence review

High resolution audio, thermal, EMF, and video captures are reviewed blind by a second researcher before anything is shared or filed.

Common questions

Paranormal research, answered plainly.

What is Independent Paranormal Research?

Independent Paranormal Research (I.P.R.O.) is a nonprofit paranormal research team founded in 2001. We investigate reported hauntings and unexplained activity, and we only call something evidence when the data survives review.

What does evidence-based paranormal research mean?

It means recorded data comes before folklore. We use instruments such as thermal imaging, EMF meters and continuous audio recording, and we rule out ordinary causes like drafts, wiring, pipes and reflections before anything is called unexplained.

How do I report paranormal activity?

Use the report form on this site to describe what you experienced and where it happened. A researcher reads every submission, and reporting is free.

Are orbs in photos paranormal?

Some television shows and ghost hunters believe so. I.P.R.O. believes most orbs are only particulate matter suspended in the air with light reflections.

What is EVP?

EVP stands for electronic voice phenomena: sounds on audio recordings that were not heard at the time. You can listen to recordings from our investigations on the EVP Evidence page.

What is ghost hunting and how does your team do it?

Ghost hunting is the search for ghosts and spirits in places where people report strange activity. Our team does it through disciplined paranormal investigations: thermal imaging, EMF meters, continuous audio and video recording, and careful review of everything we capture.

Can you investigate my haunted house?

Yes. If you believe your home is haunted, report what you are experiencing. Our researchers look into hauntings and haunted houses, document the activity, and check for ordinary causes before concluding anything. Reporting is free.

What are poltergeists, spirits and entities?

People use these words for unexplained activity: poltergeists are blamed for moving objects and loud noises, spirits and ghosts for apparitions, and entities or invisible beings for presences that are felt but not seen. We investigate each report the same way, by recording data and testing the explanations.

What if I hear things that go bump in the night?

Knocks, footsteps and sounds at night often have ordinary sources like pipes, settling wood and wiring, but sometimes they do not. Write down when and where it happens and send us a report, and we will help you investigate.

Why does I.P.R.O. spend its time investigating the unknown?

We are a nonprofit team that enjoys seeking out the unknown and investigating the unknown with evidence rather than guesswork. Whether a haunting turns out to be explainable or not, a documented answer helps the people living with it.

Report activity

Tell us what happened

Investigations are free. Nothing you send is published, sold or shared without your written consent, and we will tell you honestly when there is an ordinary explanation.

Base of operations

IPRO is located in the Pacific NW in the greater Seattle Area, and serves the Pacific NW, West coast, and sometimes we investigate across the USA!  No investigation is too small nor too Large!

Response

Every report sent to the IPRO Team is read by a researcher before any site visit is scheduled, and information is obtained from the client about the site and location before setting up an investigation.
